MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

HEALTHY RELATIONS SUPPORT

Previously known as Mixteca’s Domestic Violence Support Program, our Healthy Relationships Support Program takes on a more holistic approach to encourage healthy relationships between spouses and among family members. Through this initiative we seek to continue increasing awareness that domestic violence is a crime for which there are laws and resources in this country; challenge community norms that perpetuate or tolerate gender violence; and link individuals and families to culturally sensitive domestic violence resources. We also seek to encourage effective family communication and parenting techniques to help individuals achieve a happy and healthy family life. Mixteca offers Healthy Relationships Support in both group counseling and individual counseling settings. Group counseling is offered on Saturdays and individual counseling is offered weekday evenings. For more information, please call us at 718- 965-4795.

LGBTQ+ SUPPORT

LGBTQ+ Latinx youth experience one of the highest rates of homelessness in NYC. Our newest addition to our mental health services, LGBTQ+ support groups, aims to get the conversation rolling about issues LGBTQ+ Latinx youth face and to provide support to LGBTQ+ identifying Latinx youth and their families. Mixteca offers two monthly LGBTQ+ support groups–one for youth and one for parents or family members of LGBTQ+ Latinx youth. With the LGBTQ+ youth group, Mixteca seeks to provide individuals with a sense of community and a safe space to receive support. With the LGBTQ+ parents and family members group, Mixteca seeks to educate community members on LGBTQ+ issues to promote acceptance, inclusivity, and healthy family relationships. For more information, please call us at 718- 965-4795.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

In response to the increased levels of fear and stress seen in the community due to the political climate, Mixteca has started offering emotional support to individuals and families as it relates to immigration stress. Emotional support is provided through individual counseling and emotional health workshops. In individual counseling sessions, individuals are provided with a safe space to voice their worries, work problems out with support from a counselor, and are connected to culturally appropriate resources as needed. Mixteca’s emotional health workshops aim to provide community members with psychoeducational tools to improve their wellbeing. Topics covered in our emotional health workshops include stress management, self-care, and healthy communication. For information on upcoming workshops or to schedule an appointment for individual counseling, please call us at 718- 965-4795.

*All our services are free, provided in Spanish, and are culturally appropriate for Latinx Spanish-speaking immigrants.*

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING FOR HELPING PROFESSIONS

Not only is it important to raise mental health awareness in the communities being served, it’s also important that professionals serving these communities are kept up-to-date with mental health related topics. To promote professional development for helping professions, Mixteca has partnered with other local organizations to provide free mental health related trainings. Past training topics include mental health first aid, vicarious trauma and self-care, and gender-based violence. Please contact us to learn about our upcoming training offerings.
